Kent County Council has awarded a major design and construction contract to build a new road across a river, flood plain and railway line worth an estimated £34.46 million.

The work is being commissioned on behalf of the Council’s Growth, Environment and Transport directorate.
The new road will form part of a new strategic highway known as Sturry Link Road (SLR). The site is located 3km to the north-east of Canterbury, in Kent, on the western outskirts of the village of Sturry.
The intent of the SLR is to support the level and distribution of development being proposed in the Canterbury City Council’s Local Plan, with new home allocations of around 16,000.
The contract has been awarded to VolkerFitzpatrick, one of the UK’s leading engineering and construction companies, and one of two companies in the bidding for the work. VolkerFitzpatrick is a part of VolkerWessels UK, a market leading contracting group of five closely-linked businesses. Together the group provides integrated and ground-breaking solutions for the civil engineering and construction sectors, including marine, water and environmental infrastructure.
The scheme comprises 550 metres of new single carriageway and southbound bus lane, which will be supported for 250 metres on a multi-span structure over six spans each in the order of 42 metres to carry the road over both arms of the Great Stour River, its flood plain and the Canterbury to Ramsgate railway line.
North and south of the structure the new road will be supported on embankments leading to two new roundabouts. It also includes construction of surface water storage ponds and environmental mitigation work.
The contractor will be responsible for the design and construction of the whole of the works, obtaining technical approval and for the discharge of all planning conditions and associated costs, and for obtaining all other necessary third-party approvals and consents.
With an annual expenditure of over £1 billion on goods and services and a population of 1.6 million, Kent County Council is the largest local authority in England covering an area of 3,500 square kilometres. The Council operates in partnership with 12 district councils and 289 parish/town councils.
